Partial ulnar ostectomy, stereotactic body radiation therapy, and palliative radiation therapy as local limb sparing treatment modalities for ulnar tumors in dogs

Background Information on dogs that undergo limb preserving local treatment for ulnar tumors is currently limited. Objective To describe the clinical characteristics and outcomes in underwent partial ulnectomy or radiation therapy (RT) bone tumors, to evaluate potential risk factors as well pre-treatment association with modality selected. Animals Forty client-owned RT an tumor from July 2006 2021. Methods The medical records database a single institution were retrospectively reviewed, data recorded analyzed. Results Radiation was performed 24 dogs, 12 stereotactic body (SBRT) palliative (PRT) plans, 16 dogs. Biomechanical complications occurred 6/12 (50%) SBRT, PRT, 3/16 (18.8%) ulnectomy. majority of had good functional outcome following ulnectomy, no required surgical stabilization carpus even lateral styloid process excision. Pathologic fracture 4/12 (33.3%) SBRT 5/12 (41.7%) PRT. Local progression recurrence documented 2/12 (16.7%) 2/16 (12.5%) overall median survival time 198 days, significantly associated improved included adjuvant chemotherapy administration method received chemotherapy. Clinical relevance Both effective tolerated modalities tumors.
